Still, the general effect of Sydney is charming, and the innumerable bays and arms of the harbour, which extend inland and command unexpected views from almost every street, make it a most pleasant city. The same contrast can be seen in the style of buildings.

While most houses in the suburbs are single-story bungalows built of brick or wood, many buildings in the central business district, where land costs are much higher, are high-rise structures. Rapid development beginning in the 1960s transformed the downtown, which now looks like a mini-Manhattan rising from the harbor shore, but in fact most of the buildings are not tall by North American standards.

Soaring above the city center is the Sydney Tower (completed in 1981, spire added in 1991), 1,000 feet (305 m) tall and featuring restaurants and an observation deck. Additional business centers emerged in North Sydney, connected to the city of Sydney by the Harbor Bridge, and Parramatta, 15 miles (25 km) west of the city centre.

Only one-third of the county is classified as urban, but the majority of the county's population lives in urban areas. The pattern of suburban sprawl, due to the cheapness of land in earlier days and the desire of ordinary Australians to have their own houses and gardens, created problems for authorities responsible for sewage and transport.

The expansion is also in stark contrast to the relatively small and compact central business district, which is wedged into a narrow rocky peninsula between the two arms of Sydney's harbour. The first view of Sydney, whether from the sea or the air, is always spectacular.

Built on low hills around a vast harbor with countless bays and inlets, the city is dominated by the Sydney Harbor Bridge, one of the longest steel-arched bridges in the world, and the Opera House with its gleaming white shell.

Located on the south-east coast of Australia, Sydney is the country's largest city and one of the most important ports in the South Pacific with its magnificent harbor and strategic location.
